What Is a BIBS System in a Hyperbaric Chamber?

When comparing professional hyperbaric chambers, buyers often focus on pressure, chamber size, and comfort. Oxygen delivery deserves the same attention. A Built-In Breathing System, commonly called BIBS, gives each user a dedicated way to breathe oxygen while the chamber maintains a controlled pressurized environment.

The simple explanation: The chamber creates pressure, while the BIBS delivers breathing oxygen through a mask and manages the user's exhaled gas.

What Is a BIBS System?

BIBS stands for Built-In Breathing System. It is a dedicated breathing-gas system installed in a hyperbaric chamber. Instead of releasing treatment oxygen throughout an air-pressurized chamber, BIBS sends it directly to the user through a fitted mask or another compatible breathing interface.

BIBS delivers oxygen through a dedicated mask instead of depending on oxygen dispersed throughout the chamber. This provides a clearer and more controlled breathing arrangement. In a multi-user chamber, each seat can have its own breathing station.

2. Better Control of the Chamber Environment

Exhaled gas still contains unused oxygen. If it is continuously released into the chamber, the ambient oxygen level may rise. A BIBS with external exhaust helps limit that buildup, allowing the chamber atmosphere and the user's breathing oxygen to be managed separately.

Some low-pressure soft chambers use a standard oxygen mask or nasal interface without a separate overboard exhaust. That setup should not automatically be described as a complete BIBS. Chamber type alone does not confirm the oxygen-delivery configuration.
